Not Everyone can stay on your journey
Not everyone is meant to walk with you for your entire journey.
Some people are chapters, not the whole book and that’s okay.
I was recently reminded of this in a very real way.
Someone I once considered a friend wasn’t actually there to support me. What I initially interpreted as concern slowly revealed itself as constant nitpicking focusing on my missteps, highlighting my flaws, and rarely acknowledging my growth.
It took time (and honesty with myself) to realize this:
Support doesn’t feel like surveillance.
Growth has a way of changing relationships. When you evolve, the dynamics shift. Some people grow alongside you. Others become uncomfortable with who you’re becoming and that discomfort shows up as criticism instead of encouragement.
Here are three things I learned:
First, real support celebrates progress, not perfection
Supportive people don’t wait for you to “get it all right” before they acknowledge your effort.
Next, feedback should strengthen you, not diminish you
Healthy feedback leaves you clearer and more confident, even when it’s challenging. It challenges your thinking without attacking your worth.
Finally, alignment matters more than history
Time shared does not always equal future compatibility. Some people were right for who you were not who you are becoming. Growth changes priorities, values, and direction, and it’s okay if not everyone fits the next chapter.
If you’re finding that certain relationships feel heavier as you grow, pause and reflect. It may not mean you’re losing people it may mean you’re turning the page.
